With regards to a recent debate, this lengthy post is written to counter the erroneous view that Natsu is stronger than Laxus. Although they have not fought each other after a long time, the difference in power and skill between these 2 is akin to heaven and earth.
This particular debater resorts to the argument “stop fangirling” and pulls out theories derived from what he sees as a trend displayed by other stories (even dog-fighting, so I bet he watched Ginga Densetsu Weed). How characters in other manga developed has no direct bearing on the development of Fairy Tail’s protagonist. I do not deny that I do fangirl when it comes to Laxus, but the same goes for Grimmjow, I also fangirl when it comes to him. However, I am clear on the fact that Grimmjow is never among one of the strongest characters in Bleach. I don’t idealise my favourite character. It isn’t love at first sight, my first favourite character in FT was actually Jellal. I adore a character for who he is rather than who I want him to be. The same principle is applied to my choice of husband. This debater has exhibited a deficiency in maturity and projected it upon his opponent in a debate. It’s not indicative of biological age though, since one of my parents also tends to commit the same folly.
In the beginning, the first clash between Laxus and Natsu was a missed punch. This highlights the speed advantage of the lightning mage. In pokemon, speed is almost the key to victory, as most game guides suggest. A Chinese idiom says, “The key to military success is speed.” In a fight, speed is a definite advantage, I am saying this as a martial arts practitioner. Speed allows you to make use of more tactics, you can even flee more effectively if your opponent is proven to be stronger. In a knife fight, for example, speed actually matters more than strength, especially when your technique may be a little bit inferior. It suffices to say even to the most recent chapter that Laxus is much faster than Natsu, PLUS he’s physically more buffed. If someone is faster AND more muscular it usually spells doom for the enemy, that’s why men almost always best women in serious combat.
Laxus fought Mystogan first, using some energy, then Natsu and Erza alternating, using more energy. Then, Natsu faced him alone and could have died if Gajeel didn’t bail him out. The pair of Dragon Slayers then fought against Laxus together, but they did not actually gain the upper hand. Levy came to postpone the fight before Fairy Law was invoked. If it had not been the heart of the caster being kind on the inside, Natsu (and everyone else in FT) would have died. In this fight, Gajeel made a clear statement that Laxus’ level was beyond their reach. He never said the same for Erza or anyone else.
The difference in skill level is highlighted by the conflict with Grimoire Heart. Natsu, together with an “elite attack team” of Fairy Tail (with Erza) were consistently overwhelmed by Master Hades. Laxus was able to fight on par with him at least briefly. Erza was amazed and asked, “Was he always this powerful?” Natsu himself admitted that he was weaker than Laxus, right after he ate that lightning! When Laxus transferred his magic power to Natsu, BOTH parties were not at full power. The claim that Natsu’s Lightning Flame Dragon mode was the added power of Laxus and Natsu at full strength is easily falsified.
Who’s making Laxus stronger than he really is? Hiro Mashima??? How absurd! I didn’t draw those panels or make those episodes. Who’s fanboying for Natsu? Just because he’s the main character doesn’t propel him to become the strongest character. In Digimon Adventure, for example, Tai’s Wargreymon wasn’t the strongest digimon either, they relied on teamwork and connections to win, that’s the moral of most anime and manga stories. Fairy Tail is a story that highlights nakama power, you get the point?
In a non-canonical anime-only episode (EP 129), Natsu had a duel with Laxus and lost in one blow. I normally wouldn’t count it as evidence, but that debater made an unsubstantiated claim: Pantherlily stated that Natsu was emitting the same level of magical power as Laxus. I have watched and re-watched that episode to see if I was mistaken. With my limited Japanese listening proficiency, I failed to hear anything like that coming from Pantherlily. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt, provided that it be true, Pantherlily’s statement does not constitute absolute truth. Makarov said that Jura was on par with Gildarts, but as I recall, Laxus beat the crap out of him with his Secret Slayer Art. Master Hades said that Laxus was on the same tier as Gildarts, but there is no evidence suggesting that they are as strong as each other. From peripheral deduction, I’d say that Gildarts was stronger than Laxus. We haven’t seen Gildarts in action recently, so I can’t say for now.
In GMG, Natsu and the rest of the guild was shown to idolise Laxus. I don’t see Natsu being idolised by anyone other than Lucy who had a crush on him at some point along the plot. Makarov already said, he would rather prefer to have Laxus or Gildarts, meaning that he still sees Laxus as stronger than Natsu. I’m gonna take this experienced Guild Master’s words more seriously than Pantherlily’s (but then he never actually said that they were on the same level). From peripheral deduction, Laxus is stronger than Erza. When Natsu stormed into Sabertooth’s inn, Minerva easily deflected his LFD spell, but as I recall, Erza beat the crap out of her.
In “Exciting Ryuretsu Land” (FT 298 Pg 20), Laxus was seen catching and KOing Natsu without any visible damage (difficulty level: low). This is clearly canonical, so at that point, Laxus was still much better than Natsu (in speed, skill and power I presume).
In “Song of the Fairies” (FT 355 Pg 21), Natsu was seen to be SUPER-AFRAID of Erza when she got mad. Hiro MIGHT have planned on Natsu surpassing Erza and Laxus eventually, but the time is not now.
The argument that Laxus was a “fake Dragon Slayer” and Natsu the real thing is true, but it does not have any bearing on power level. Gildarts isn’t even a Dragon Slayer, but he owns them both. Makarov, as a Guild Master, isn’t a Dragon Slayer either, so is Erza, the S-Class Mage.
Therefore, I conclude that Natsu is still not as strong as Laxus. Even if in an unlikely event that my opponent could counter ALL of my arguments above, there is still no proof suggesting Natsu being stronger than Laxus, after all we can only judge from feats as they haven’t directly fought each other for a FREAKING LONG TIME.
In the end, this debater blocked me on twitter for speaking the truth (for differing from his view, really). It’s a shame. He takes this too personally. I mean, hey, it’s manga/anime, nothing to lose your life or friend over. I can tell this person is either a kid or a die-hard Natsu fan.
What’s your take on this?

Laxus:
The magnetic Social Darwinist with immense power and obsessively-loyal minions to back up his philosophy and carry out his grand plans
Ascendant: Capricorn
Sun: Scorpio
Moon: Taurus
Mercury: Scorpio
Venus: Capricorn
Mars: Scorpio (as manifested clearly in his powers)
Jupiter: Sagittarius (throw that Houtengeki!)
Saturn: Capricorn
Uranus: Aquarius (Look at the way he dresses and stresses that he has to be his own man)
Neptune: Capricorn
Pluto: Scorpio
North Node: Cancer (Mira will bring him there, Cana MAY bring him there with some difficulty, Lucy MAY bring him there)
South Node: Capricorn
Since FTverse appears to have different planetary motions from our world, almost any chart can be constructed. This is basically why fictional characters are so “strange” to us.
Laxus appears to have the same Sun, Moon and Ascendant as Erwin Rommel the Desert Fox (WWII, German, Field Marshal).
His chart is evidently dominated by Scorpio and Capricorn. This should come as no surprise to anyone. His “imitating” Natsu is actually a positive astrological move, as Aries has the most to teach Scorpio.
His recent martyrdom indicates that he’s manifesting more Cancerian traits. His NN is in Cancer, this means he is evolving for the better.
He may have Leo in one or more of his asteroids and/or houses.
I will produce multiple analyses to this particular character. More coming soon… The pairing potential report should be especially amazing.
